Daniele Williams of Jamaica, who won the women’s 100m hurdles title in a personal best of12.57sec, reflected afterward on the novelty of being in a race that also involved her sister, Shermaine, who finished seventh in 12.95.
“It is an amazing feeling having your sister competing with you and against you especially when you both reach the final at the Worlds. But I’m more than happy to race against her here. She is a great competitor. She is my sibling and she is the person who pushed me to start in the athletics. She was first to congratulate me after the finish.
Now I’m trained by Lennox Graham in North Carolina in the USA and I stay there mostly eleven months during the year. I think winning the Worlds is a great reason to visit my home even for a short stay.
Going to Beijing I had only one dream. I wanted to achieve the final here. After theUS trials my coach made the decision to let me go to the World University Games and then come back directly for training. I think that was the right decision as we were able to prepare for Beijing as thoroughly as we needed.
Germany’s CindyRoleder, who took silver in a personal best of 12.59, added:
“I can not even find the right words to describe what I feel. That was the race of my life. Everything came together.
“In any case, I’m going to continue to perform in pentathlon and heptathlon as that training is very good for me. I’m training in a great group. We’re very supportive of each other. But I’ll try to switch to the hurdles when I have the possibility.
Belarussian AlinaTalay, third in a national record of 12.66, said she had considered giving up her career in 2012.
“The last couple of the seasons were very tough for me. In 2012, I wanted to finish my career because I had too many problems with my health. But I was lucky to find my new coach from Austria and I’m so happy we found the ways to strengthen my body, to come back on the track healthy and even to improve a lot of things.
“Even I didn’t expect such a great season including European indoor gold and now World bronze in Beijing. I hope that next season in Rio I also will also manage to beat my personal best in the same style as I did here.
Of course, last year USA hurdlers dominated in our event and it was really tough to fight against them all that time. But now you can see that European girls can also make the Worlds’ podium.”
